Your
new tile floor is very fragile for the first day. Here are a
few rules:
Do not get the fresh grout wet.
Do not allow pets with sharp nails to walk on fresh
grout.
Do not track dust or dirt on fresh grout.
Keep traffic to a minimum; if you must walk on the
floor wear socks or stockings.
Do not slide furniture across fresh grout.
The
first week of care is critical to the grout:
Go out and buy a
new sponge mop (about $10.00 at most food stores).
Dampen the grout evenly with warm water (Do Not Soak)
Once or twice a day for 2-3 days. This strengthens the grout
and helps it to cure. Do not be alarmed if the water becomes
the color of the grout, this is normal.
Do not dirty or stain the grout for at least a week.
After this time the grout is cured enough to resist deep
stains (the grout will stain but can be cleaned).
After the first few days of care, regular
maintenance can begin:
Use a fine broom or
electric broom to sweep debris.
Damp mopping with warm water is all the floor needs. A
small amount of ammonia may be added to the water if desired.
Repeated use of vinegar will harm the grout. DO NOT
USE!
Soap will build up on the grout and dull the tile. DO
NOT USE!
Following
these few simple steps will ensure you and your new tile floor
a long and healthy relationship, and many years of happiness.
Good Luck!
